These DOT-3AA2175s can be installed singly, in pairs or in large groups into systems where high gas volumes or continuous delivery are critical. Pressure regulators for high pressure cylinders are often referred to as first stage regulators because they take the static cylinder pressure and reduce it to a safer, more manageable level (perhaps between 5 and 50bar). In some cases it may be necessary to use a single regulator to provide lower pressures, such as diving equipment or breathing apparatus, in which case a dual stage regulator is required. This device combines a first stage regulator with a second stage device to provide two stages of decompression, with the only adjustment being the final delivered pressure. The intermediate pressure between the stages is fixed.

As industrial gases are often used in critical processes and high pressure cylinders have limited fill capacity, it is often best to have 2 separate cylinders or a cylinder bank with a dual inlet regulator to allow for easier swapping between supply sides should the supply pressure drop below a suitable minimum. Automatic changeover regulators further simplify this process by allowing the user to specify the primary supply side and then switch to the secondary side when the primary pressure reaches a minimum set point pressure. At this point an alarm can be triggered to alert the user that one side's supply has been depleted and needs to be replaced before the other side is depleted.

Second stage regulators or intermediate pressure regulators take the reduced pressure from the first stage of up to 50bar and regulate down to the desired working pressure, anything between 1.5 and 50bar. These are the most common types of pressure reducing valves seen on sites and have to deliver accurate regulation for a wide range of desired pressures.
