Whether you are at home or at work, you take precautions to prevent fires. However, fires can occur, whether from cooking or other sources. Without proper suppression, a spark can quickly turn into a flame and spread, creating smoke, damaging property and endangering lives. To prepare for this, equip your space or facility with fire extinguishers specifically designed to address the hazards in question.

Fires require oxygen, heat, and a fuel source-usually a combustible or flammable material. The presence of oxygen and heat, along with the amount of fuel, causes the flames to spread throughout a building or outdoors.

Fire cylinders stop this spread in one of three ways: cooling the heat source, cutting off the fuel, or reducing the available oxygen supply. Additionally, covering the fuel source disconnects it from the oxygen in the air, ultimately suffocating the fire until it is extinguished.

To prevent the spread of flames, fire extinguishers are typically portable aerosol designs filled with water, chemical foam, or powder. Pressing a lever located on the top changes the pressure in the cylinder, releasing the contents.

Note that, especially for commercial use, fire extinguishers can serve as a backup to your overall firefighting strategy.
